PICKERING VILLAGE BIA (Business Improvement Area)
JAZZ FESTIVAL CANCELED

   http://www.newsdurhamregion.com/article/173168
Tuesday March 1st the Pickering Village BIA held its second monthly board meeting since the new board was formed. Pickering Village BIA board meetings are now held the first Tuesday of each month in the Village at McEachnie's meeting room. Attendance of all BIA members is welcome at our monthly board meetings.
The PV BIA extends Kingston Road east from Elizabeth street, west to Rotherglen, Church Street north to Sherwood and south to the 401 overpass.

Unfortunately after much discussion and debate with our new board, the vote taken to host a Jazz Festival the second weekend in June this year was voted down. This decision is only for 2011 and other events are planned for later in the year. We reflect that other GTA events have taken a one year hiatus in order to ensure success in later years.

The deciding comments against it were the fact that we are a new board and have a short lead time with need for much volunteer planning. This event would consume "ALL" of the current budget after payment is made for streetscape enhancements on Old Kingston Road. Success of this event is also weather dependent, making it a high risk undertaking. Our current budget is half of what it was in 2010.

The Town of Ajax was actively supporting the 2011 Jazz Festival. The Town was asked by the BIA to run the event with the support of the BIA, however the Town advised they did not have the resources to run the event.

The BIA is also in need of people to assist on committees, especially the events committee. The BIA board is in need of a secretary to fill an open voting position. A job description that can be forwarded to anyone willing to help.

The Pickering Village BIA board is in the process of establishing operating guidelines and procedures. The BIA has recently compiled a listing of businesses in our area and we seek participation from all. Please keep in touch via our web site (under construction) at www.PickeringVillage.ca <http://www.pickeringvillage.ca/> . We are here to work as a unit for the greater good of all and very much welcome your comments, suggestions and input. As a new board, we are beginning to establish a structure that best represents the whole BIA membership.
